ABOUT CITYSPEAK

boston based | world faced | multimedia minded | undergrad centered | we want your work!

CitySpeak
is a student-run media journal operated and sponsored by the Professional New Media Writing Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Committed to promoting and showcasing local urban voices, we publish on a weekly basis. Whether it be a traditional short story, personal essay, poem, painting, photograph, or an engaging multimedia creation, we keep our content varied and on the cutting edge of literary - and human -  expression.

If you have a story that needs telling, send it to our staff at CitySpeakumb617@Gmail.com. We strive to work diligently with you, the artist, to ensure your piece is ready for publication.

Although our primary content source is students and alums of the Professional and New Media Writing Concentrations, we accept submissions from the entire UMB community.

To receive our weekly feature, subscribe to our blog. For a behind-the-scenes perspective on all things CitySpeak, follow our social media.
And last, but not least - keep your eyes peeled for our special end-of-season edition!

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

email submissions to cityspeakumb617@gmail.com

CitySpeak Submission Guidelines:

The editors of CitySpeak look to present a variety of mediums through which creators tell their story or the story of another in the City of Boston. That said, there are guidelines to consider when submitting your work:

  • Work must be able to be transferred digitally

    • If a submission is something such as a painting, take the best possible photo and send it that way

  • For submissions that are not writing, i.e. photos, fashion, videos, include with your submission a vision statement, providing an explanation for the piece

  • For written pieces:

Each writer must submit two drafts which are subject to change by the editors. Editing of the first round of drafts focuses on the content of the piece. CitySpeak editing staff contribute comments, opinions (such as shifting the focus of the article) and make suggestions about adding details to certain aspects of the piece. The same process occurs for the second round of editing, except this time the editors are solely focused on grammar, spelling, and mechanics.
